Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.

An recent initialism surfaced a couple of months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to doctors such as paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for physicians to treat a child who has seen the death of their whole family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of young amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary about scores of doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are continuing. Officials disputes these claims, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is implicated in. But while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, we are told, is what global togetherness resembles.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it historically embodied. A competition that was originally built on peace has now become a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
