Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
